Gelati monastry had imagined one of the developted cultural centers in the middle century. Eleven kilometres to the east of Kuataisi, not very far from the town, in a picturesque ravine of the Tsqaltsitela River is situated the Gelati Monastry. The Gelati monastry was founded at the beginning of the 12th century, the period with the most significant historical events in Gergia. The monastry was established by David the Builder in 1106. Entering the yard of the Gelati Monastry you can see the architectural ensemble in the green glade: the Main Church with its three aspes facing the visitors, to the east of the it S.t. George’s domed church that is comparatively less in dimensions and St. Nicholas’ Church, a two-storeyed building with an arched passage on the ground floor, to the west of the MainCurch. A little farther there is a bell-tower rising near a spring from which drinking water is running through clay pipes to the ground floor of the bell-tower. To the west of the Main and St. Nichola’schurches rise the walls of the Academy founded by King David the Builder in the 12 th century.




Dwelling-places and other secular building were situated along the walls of the monastery which had given place to the constructions of later period. There is a two-storeyed construction, the former gates, in the southern part of the wall where King David the Builder is buried.




The MAIN CHURCH OF THE VIRGIN is notable for its size and artistic decision in the architectural ensemble of the Gelati Monastry (it is 29,20 metres long, 20,20 metres wide, 20 metres in height not including the dome and 36,39 meters with the dome). The construction of the Church of the Virgin began when the monastry was founded. The facades of the church are decorated with long frames and light mural arches. The church is not rich in ornaments. Mastery of technique, fine stone carving of tiny halfcolumns and of the disk of the middle window in the alter and the artistic solution of the window in the southern façade testify that, according to the trends of the epoch, the church was adorned with the ornamental carving.The church is unusually high and spacious, but still it is perfectly lighted by the large windows in the walls and in the drum. Entering the church, visitors’ attention is attracted by the splended mosaic adorning the concha of the apse. In the centre of the composition, against the twinkling golden background, the artist has depicted the Virgin and Child with the archangels Mikel and Gabriel on both sides. The mosaic is contemporaneous with the architecture of the church.




The mural painting of the time gave way to the later painting mainly executed in the 16-17th centuries. Special attention is to be paid to the painting of the lower register of the nothern wall (16 c.) with portrayals of historical persionages and among them King David the Builder. It is full-length potrait. In his left hand the King is holding a model of the Main Church and a scroll of charter in his right hand. It is the only portrait of the King that has survived. An inscription in ecclesiastical uncial has preserved on the portrait. It reads as follows; Eternal memory to Great King David the Builder, Amen”.




ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH is situated to the east of the Main Church. It was built in the 13th century . general design of the church and decorative solution of the interior follow the tradition of the epoch. Our attention is attracted by the original treatment of the under vault piers, the round pillars, the bases of which are decorated with two rows of festoons. In the church you can see a three-spanned low barrier separating the alter from the reat of the space. The barrier is contemporaneous with the church.




The inscription on the west arch tells us that Eudemon Chkhetidze, the Cathalicos of West Gergia, had the walls of St. George’s Church painted in the 17th century.




ST. NICHOLAS’ CHURCH is a two-storeyed building. It stands to the west of the Main Church. The Main Church of the monastry, the building of the Academy and St. Nicholas’ Church are in functional connection. The low storey of the building represents a domed passage opened with high and broad arches on the east and west, and with comparatively low ones on the north and south. This edifice forms a pedestal on which a small church is erected. The platbands of the windows and the entrance are deprived of tradition Georgian carving on stone. A stone staircase leads to the second floor.




THE BELFRY is a three-storeyed building. The first two storeys are contemporaneous with the monastry. The third storey, which represents a barrel opened with arches, was erected later (14 century).




THE ACADEMY BUILDING Georgia’s culture and education of the 12 th century is inseparably cennected with King David the Builder activity, namely with the foundation of the Gelati Monastry and the Academy. The annalist tells us: ,,King David the Builder gathered both Georgian and foreign scholars distinguished for their talents and moral dignity and setteled them in Gelati .” Thus outstanding philosophers Ioanne Petritsi, Arsen Iqaltoeli and others lived and worked in the Gelati Monastry. The annalist records the following about the Gelati Academy: ,,Gealti is the second Jerusalem, the place for learning all kinds of virtues and various sciences like another Athens”. Many literary works, works on philosophy and history were written and translated in the Gelati Academy. Such disciplines as arithmetics, geometry, grammar, rhetoric, phisolophy, astronomy and music were learnt in the Academy. A school of gold-chasing where unique specimens of art were created, also existed in Gelati. Sufice to mention the Khakhuli Icon, a brilliant artistic specimen of the 12 th century. The Gelati Academy existed as far as the first twenties of the 16 th century.




The Academy building stands on the western verge of the steep slope. A richly decorated portico supported by four piers is adjoined to the entrance. All the four piers are different shape. The Gelati Academy is a significant monument of the Renaissance holding a place of honour in the treasury of the Gergian national culture.
