GOALS OF THE PROJECT

Our group’s attention in the presented project will be given to three issues. Focusing our work on them would allow us to reveal the Georgian minority in Iran for broader group of Polish scholars working in the area relevant to ethnic minorities, Iran and Georgia. Above mentioned issues are as follows:
I. Migration and life history of the Georgians inhabitating Iran
a. A description of the Georgians’ history from the period of their living in Georgia to the moment of coming to the Isfahan province.
b. A description of the four centuries of the Georgians’ presence in the Isfahan province, their primary role, later assimilation and their part in the various events of the Persian and Iranian history
II. Language, identity, traditions and beliefs
a. A research on changes occured in the language of the Iranian Georgians in comparison with the standard modern language in Georgia
b. A research on the national and political identity of the Iranian Georgians and people of the mixed origin.
c. A research on the traditions that remain among the Iranian Georgians from the time of their arrival to the Isfahan province as well as a comparison of the Georgian and Iranian Georgian traditions in order to find any difference between them.
III. The impact of the Georgian presence in Iran on the bilateral relations between Tbilisi and Tehran
a. An analysis of that how does the Georgian minority in Iran influence Tbilisi’s policy towards Tehran.
b. An analysis of that how does the Georgian minority in Iran influence Tehran’s policy towards Tbilisi.
c. An analysis of the Georgian government policy towards the Georgia minority in Iran
d. A complete analysis of the Georgio-Iranian relations
Described range of the project is a draft and may change after we contact Iranian and Georgian scholars and authorities for advice.


PLACE AND DATE OF REALISATION

The places we are going to visit and the schedule of our projekt are presented below:
l Iran, Ishafan and Isfahan province (Fereydani) – 4-16. VII 2009
l Iran, Teheran – 16-18. VII 2009
l Georgia, Tbilisi – 20-26. VII 2009

RESEARCH METHODS
The whole research was divaded into three parts:
l Field research - namely personal meetings with the Georgians living in the Isfahan province, carrying out interviews with them, analysis of their language, traditions, behaviour, drawing a comparison with neighbouring nations inhabiting the province, meetings with the local cultural and political liders related to the Georgian minority or ones working in the Iranian Georgian area.
l Meetings with the experts in this field of knowledge – that is with Iranian and Georgian scholars who dedicate effort to study the Georgian minority in Iran. Discussions with politicians and experts in the ethnic minorities’ issues on both Iranian and Georgian sides are also in the center of our interest.
l An analysis of books and any other materiale dedicated to the issue od Iranian Georgians.

RESULTS OF THE PROJECT

In addition to the widening of the knowledge of the Polish scholars and readers in the field of the Georgio-Iranian problems that would happen by the organising exhibitions, meetings and settling new relations between Polish and foreign universites, the main result of the projekt would be publishing articles dedicated to the issue we are studying in the university’s academic magazines or independent scientific publication .

The project is being implemented by a group of the University of Warsaw students representing the Institute of the International Relations, the Oriental Faculty and the Center for the East European Studies.
